Among valuable personal memorabilia sent by Pope – Pensioner are the three rings given to him by John Paul II: a gold ring – the most precious one, associated with the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, a ring with the Good Shepherd which John Paull II was giving to bishops and cardinals, and a silver ring with a symbol of Christ. Benedict XVI gave us also letters that he had received from the Polish Pope: two letters with congratulations to cardinal Ratzinger from the year 1992 and 2003 and a letter in Latin that appointed Cardinal to be the legate during the ceremony of the 750th anniversary of the canonization of St. Stanislaw BM in Cracow in 2003. Among the gifts there is also the picture taken during the Mass celebrated on the 10th anniversary of the pontificate of John Paul II on 30 10 1988, that presents both of dignitaries.
In his letter addressed to the Director of the Museum, Pope Benedict XVI wrote: “Going through all the memorabilia was like going again trough all these years I spent with the Holy Father John Paul II, which – from the perspective of passing time, are more beautiful and more precious to me as I’m getting to understand better and better the greatness of his person. (…) I hope that these gifts will delight visitors to the Museum and will deepen their love for Pope John Paul II and the Church.”
Gift can be admired till the end of the holiday in the same Museum area, where one can find a copy of the Holly Door of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome that were blessed by Pope Benedict XVI, and encyclicals of John Paul II.
Benedict XVI visited Wadowice and the family home of his Great Predecessor, on 27 May 2007. His entry in the Memorial Book of the Museum and the bas-relief of the Mother with the Papal coat of arms are great souvenirs of the visit.
