The ingress of Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko to the papal basilica of Saint Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore) in Rome took place on 2 February 2017, in the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. The Pope Francis appointed cardinal Rylka archpriest of this unique temple on 28 December 2016.
Cardinal Rylko is a great friend of the Family Home of John Paul II in Wadowice and a chairman of the Museum Council. For thirteen years (2003-2016) Cardinal served as a chairman of, existing until 2016, the Pontifical Council for the Laity.
The basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major), also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Snows, is situated on the Essquiline Hill, in the place where in the ancient times there was a temple dedicated to the goddess Juno – protector of childbirth. It is one of the four patriarchal basilicas, the most important place of worship of the Virgin Mary in Rome, and the biggest temple of the eighty-Roman temples dedicated to the Mother of God. The icon with the image of Mary known as Our Lady of the Snow can be found in the temple.
The office of Archpriest of the Basilica is certified by sources from the twelfth century.
